Virtual - First in Flight: The Wright Brothers and the first Airplane

Wednesday, May 267:00—8:30 PMZoom

Orville and Wilbur Wright, two bicycle mechanics, built the first airplane in the back of their Dayton bicycle shop. The airplane flew only four times on December 17, 1903 and it never flew again but what happened to the plane over the next 45 years is actually the most intriguing part of the story.

Presented by Joseph Oldenburg, a retired librarian from Detroit Public Library having worked in the Burton Historical Collection for 10 years. He also taught Michigan History at Oakland Community College for 12 years.
